Oh Cell Phones...

Speaking of phones this week…I forgot to add in my last post on Tuesday that when Casey walked inside he had my phone which I had left in the car the night before.  Oops.  I hadn’t missed it.  “It’s dead,” he said flatly.
“Oh that’s fine, I’ll just charge it at work,” I said cheerfully.
“Only you…” he said as he shook his head.
Well, the problem was when I got to work, my phone wouldn’t charge.  At all.  I took out the battery, let it sit a while, put the battery back in, let it charge a while, only it wouldn’t charge.  All day.  A friend of mine dropped me off at Verizon so I could have them look at my phone.  Long story short, I needed a new phone.  I just got this one in January and this time I didn’t drop it in water.  It barely even has a scratch on it…but that’s probably because I don’t use it much.  The man helping me at Verizon said, “I know how you must feel…my phone is my lifeline! Do you want me to rush this order for $12.99?”
“Oh,” I said, “How much is it ground?”
“It’s free if you go with ground shipping, but you probably want your phone back right away, don’t you?”
“Nah, it’s okay.  Not having my phone is like a really nice vacation.  I don’t use it all that much anyway.  I do have some voice recordings from my family on there that I want…is there any way I can retrieve that?”
He just looked at me and stared for a minute before he stammered, “I have no idea how you can get by without your phone!  I would be frantic!”
“Wow, really?” I asked, “If anyone has an emergency they can just get a hold of my husband.  Can I leave the phone here while I wait for him in Scheel’s?” It was finally beginning to charge.  With any luck I would be able to nurse it along until my new phone arrived and if not, then oh well.
“Sure, that’s no problem,” he said.
Two pieces of fudge later, Casey found me in Scheel’s and he had my phone.  We went home and then I remembered I had to drop something off for my friend in Adel.  By now my phone had died again and I decided to leave it plugged into the wall.  Casey said, “Why don’t you take your phone with you?”
“Because it’s already dead again,” I said.
“Oh.  Well…are you sure you can’t take it with you to Heather’s?”
“Nah, I’ll just leave it plugged in.  It’ll be fine!  Just think, twenty years ago people really didn’t have cell phones like they do now and there weren’t anymore casualties on the road then there are now.  Or, if there are, it’s probably because they are using their darn phones.  Plus, Heather’s place is 15 minutes away.  If I’m not back in 45 minutes then worry, or just text Heather, okay?”
“Okay…” he said.
Isn’t it funny how dependent we have become on cell phones?
