Darn Roosters...

Okay, as you may already know (I blogged about it last week), Lucia is my favorite chicken.  She is friendly, always greets you at the door (only for food, I'm sure), eats out of my hand, doesn't mind when you pick her up, etc.  She has been acting rather peculiar though, lately.  The last several nights she hasn't come inside with the other chickens.  We looked around for her all over the place, and I finally had given up Friday night and assumed she had been eaten by something.  Then, Saturday morning when I went to do chores, I found her wandering around in Remi's stall.  She followed me to the grain bin and I fed her with her own little pile of seed.  That night she never came in again.  Sunday morning, Casey found her by our bushes out front, acting like she had a nest.
"Well, what do we do if she has a nest?" I asked, obviously concerned for the well-being of my beloved chicken.
"It's the wrong time of year for her to have a nest, but she is really weird," Casey said.
"Well of course she is weird...she's my favorite chicken." I replied.  He rolled his eyes.
"So what do we do???" I asked.
"Well, probably bring her inside," he said. I was excited already...maybe I could persuade him to make it a permanent thing...probably not, though.

Casey went outside and Lucia came running up to him to greet him.  The only problem was that Guinness snuck out at the same time, and he took off after Lucia.  She, however, had not seen him yet and was still running toward Casey.  They were surely set for a collision course, so Casey scooped Guinness up in his arms the moment he was running by and brought him  back inside.  Moments later, I walked outside, oblivious to what had just happened (I had been changing my clothes), and when I turned around from letting the mice out of the grain bin (now another task in my morning chores - there are three now, by the way.  I have dubbed them as Huey, Dewy, and Louie), Lucia was right behind me. I almost tripped over her.  "Hi, Lucia!" I said, and gave her some breakfast.  When I opened the chicken coup door, though, out came three roosters who chased her away.  I was dumbfounded.  Well, if I had three giant roosters running after me I certainly wouldn't want to come inside at night, either.  Casey came into the barn and I told him what had happened.  "Well, they want to breed her," he said.
"Don't they understand that no means NO!?  Hey, didn't you say we could eat the extra roosters?  I think they are big enough, now, right?" I asked.  Justice should be served for their actions after all, right?
"Oh yeah, probably," he replied, "But do you really want to do that?"
I did not hesitate for a moment when I said, "Yes, yes I really do."

That evening, I saw the same thing happen, and poor Lucia was huddled up in a ball on the ground.  I picked her up and took her into the chicken coop and left the rooster who had been tormenting her outside, hoping that something would eat him.  Then I went inside and asked Casey, "So...can we butcher the rooster tomorrow?"  Stay tuned...I might have a few more chicken recipes coming up in the blog...
