Sam's New Kitten
On Saturday morning I decided to take Guinness and Sam with me on a quick trip to our local gas station to get some chocolate chips for an oatmeal chocolate chip cake I was going to make for a family reunion we were heading to later that day. When we got back home, I opened the car door to let Sam and Guinness out. Sam barreled out of the car at lightening speed as he always does, and Guinness, being the cat that he is, took his time to yawn and stretch and gradually saunter over toward the door, because, let's face it: the world revolves around him. Just as Guinness was almost to the door, I heard a cat meow behind me. Not wanting Guinness to leap out of the car and get into a fight, I slammed the door in his face and whirled around to see this tiny, grey little fur ball running toward me. This particular scenario is something I dreamed about my entire childhood: a little lost kitten bounding toward me. I knew that our neighbors didn't have cats, and didn't even particularly like them, so I surmised this poor little thing had either been dumped on the highway or was a long way from home. In any event, as I knelt down to pick up this kitten, Sam came running up behind me, full speed ahead, and chased the kitten up a tree. "Sam!!! BAD DOG!!!" I yelled. For a moment his ears went flat and his eyes got wide, just as they do when he is in trouble...but then he must have realized that he was free and there really wasn't much I could do, so he jumped up in the air and started running around me in circles as if to say: "Na na na na na! Can't catch me!" I could still hear the kitten, so I walked over to the tree, and there it was: shaking and scared. As I reached for it, it began climbing up the tree. Fortunately, I was able to grab it, but it immediately began to panic, clawing and scratching trying to get away from me, so I wrapped it in my sweater and took it in to the house. Once we were in the house, I wrapped it in the towel and took it into the bedroom as Casey rolled over, took one look, and said: "No!" I looked at him and smiled and said: "Oh, come on, you would have done the same thing, too." Which is true. He has a heart of gold and can never say no to anything big or small. Well. I should rephrase that: He can never say no and really mean it when it comes to animals. After all, he was the one who chased one of our chickens down who had caught a frog earlier last week in an effort to save the frog. It actually worked...I couldn't believe it. The chicken dropped the frog, and when I asked Casey if it was okay, he responded with, "Yeah, he's alright. His pride is hurt, but I whose pride wouldn't be hurt if they were caught by a chicken?"
I took the kitten back into our kitchen, put it down and showed it where the cat food was. It immediately began inhaling the food. This kitten is skin and bones, so I'm sure it was famished. While the kitten was eating, I went back outside to let Sam inside. I stopped him in our mud room and told him, "Now, this kitten is going to be here for a little while, so you need to be nice. Do you understand me? You can't chase this cat..." I let him inside, and the kitten ran over to him and began weaving in and out of Sam's legs. He just stood there, looking at me, and then began licking this kitten. I couldn't believe it. Ever since then, Sam has been tending to this kitten. He watches it, licks it, just like a mother cat would do, and has become quite attached to it...I am amazed. So...Sam has a kitten. For now, anyway.
Guinness, on the other hand, is not so happy. He tolerates the kitten, but only barely. Mostly, if the kitten tries to rub up against him, he growls and runs away. So, with that...we have a new cat...temporarily. I will need to find a good home for this kitten...If any of you would like her, or know anyone that would offer a good home to her, please contact me via e-mail at jennyleigh925@gmail.com
She is really sweet, uses the litter box (no accidents yet), and gets along with dogs.
