Meet Sofie...
All of those e-mails have said something along the lines of: that kitten is not going anywhere...and a few others have even extended their congratulations to the new addition to our family. Thanks for all of the support, guys...
Well I did actually have one response that said: I'll take it once you get it vaccinated and spayed... That was precisely the financial responsibility I was attempting to avoid… So one phone call to the vet’s office later, I have a quote for $150.00 for shots and spaying. It's not nearly as bad as I was anticipating, but still a dent in the wallet, nonetheless. This means that I am going to have to break down and buy some sort of kitten chow (I was attempting to avoid this in an effort to convince myself that she was absolutely not staying with us) and probably move the litter box back downstairs, so she can get used to having the litter box down there...permanently. To tide us over for the next month until she has this surgery, the vet is leaving me some wormer, which I can pick up after work and pay for the next time I am in town since they will be closed before I can get over there. That way I can give it to Sofie as soon as possible and avoid an extra charge for a vet examination. Have I ever told you how much I love small towns?
As for the news above...I haven't mentioned any of this to Casey just yet. I figure one of two things will happen:
Scenario 1: He won't read this particular blog post (fat chance) and Sofie will just gradually assimilate herself into our family. We just simply won’t discuss it for a few weeks...Casey is her favorite person, anyway. It was his lap that she curled up and went to sleep on Monday night, and as much as he would hate to admit it…he actually likes her.
Scenario 2: We will be watching the news tonight, I will think I am in the clear because the subject of Sofie’s permanent residence has not come up yet today, and Casey will casually bring up my "interesting" blog post. I will get a guilty look on my face, stutter and stammer, and we will inevitably have a discussion about idealism and realism. Idealism, being that there are tons of people out there who would love a cute kitten; Realism, being that there are a lot of people who just look at you and laugh when you ask them if they want a cute little kitten, leaving you standing there in disbelief...I am a very idealistic person, as you can probably tell…So how can you toss something as poor and defenseless as a cute little kitten out to the wolves (or coyotes)? That’s right, you can't.
Either way...he has never said no to an animal, yet. Well...not one that is already in our house. Whenever I go perusing on the Animal Rescue League's website it is always a flat out NO, but that's because our house is rather small. So, this brings me to the fact that it is now time to give this kitten a permanent name because this little thing has wormed her way into my heart…
Since Casey and I have been together, we have spent quite a bit of time with my parents. They have always loved various imported beers, and unless we were having a family get-together that involved people who love beers such as Busch Light, Budweiser, or Miller Light, it was never in the house. They usually have Guinness, Bass, Newcastle, Arrogant Bastard, and various types of home brew (that’s a blog post for another day). So when I took my very first drink of Busch Light after drinking the beers mentioned above, I nearly spit it out. I can remember thinking: What is this crap??? At first, Casey thought I was somewhat stuck up and didn’t realize what “good beer” actually was…until he started drinking Guinness, Newcastle, and Arrogant Bastard. Now he has trouble choking Busch Light down, which I find rather funny. Two years ago, if he would have looked at himself now, he would never have believed it. So, with that, we have started naming our pets (such as Guinness) after various beers. Since our pets mean so much to us, we have to name them after quality beers...naturally. Since my dad is an expert when it comes to beer, is well-versed in many unique names, and Casey hasn't quite admitted to himself that we will probably be keeping Sofie; he was my go-to guy for a new permanent name for this new kitten. Not only did he laugh at me when I told him about my lack luster luck of giving her away; he told me that he and my mom said to each other as they were leaving our house on Sunday: That kitten isn't going anywhere! He suggested either Matilda or Sofie. Sofie seemed to fit this kitten to a tee. So, with that, Sofie is the name of our new kitten.
On a side note: Both Matilda and Sofie are Belgian-style beers. If you are interested in learning more about them, here is a link for more information:
